Westmoreland / Butler Sanctuary, Mt. Kisco, N.Y.

 

The Westmoreland Sanctuary is a 625 acre nature preserve with 15 miles of trails. Hills are between 4 and 5 Peston Trail Units. Footing is rated between 3 and 4 on the Universal Brophy Scale.


Right across the street, okay I684, is the Butler Memorial Sanctuary, managed by the Nature Conservancy. The 363 acres in the preserve is predominantly ridge and swale. At the top of the I684 road cut is a prominent overlook with views to Long Island Sound. It is also a popular spot for watching migrating hawks in the fall. Hills are between 4 and 5 Peston Trail Units. Footing is rated between 3 and 4 on the Universal Brophy Scale.

    Directions from the Merritt Parkway


  • Take Exit 31 off the Merritt Parkway.
  • Go North on North Street all the way into New York state through Banksville.
  • About 1.5 miles past the New York state line, just past Cat Rocks Park, take a left onto Middle Patent Road
  • Continue on Middle Patent about 1 mile until Middle Patent Ts into NY Route 22.
  • Take a left on NY Route 22. Go about 0.5 miles on 22 and take a Right on Chestnut Ridge Road. Continue on Chestnut Ridge for 1.5 mi.
  • Entrance for Westmoreland is on the right. Continue north another 100 feet. There is a bridge on your left that crosses I684. The entrance to Butler is just over the bridge.
